About the throat

The throat - known medically as the pharynx - is a muscular tube that connects the nose, mouth and larynx. It extends from the base of the skull to the beginning of the oesophagus. Depending on its location, the pharynx is divided into three sections: Nasopharynx (nasopharynx), oropharynx (oropharynx) and hypopharynx (hypopharynx). Its main functions include

Enable breathing
The pharynx directs the inhaled air from the nose or mouth into the larynx and from there into the windpipe. This makes it an important part of the upper respiratory tract.

Control the food path
When swallowing, a complex muscle movement ensures that food and liquids enter the oesophagus while the airways remain closed at the same time. This is how the pharynx protects against "swallowing".

Support speech
Together with the oral and nasal cavities, the pharynx serves as a resonance chamber. It influences the sound, volume and intelligibility of the voice.

Assume defence functions
Lymphatic structures such as the palatine and pharyngeal tonsils are located in the mucous membrane of the throat. They form an important part of the body's immune system and help to fight off pathogens.

The pharynx therefore fulfils several vital tasks.

Pharyngeal carcinoma: malignant tumour in the pharynx

Pharyngeal carcinoma is a malignant tumour that develops in the mucous membranes of the throat (pharynx).

There are three main forms, depending on the site of origin: nasopharyngeal carcinoma (nasopharyngeal carcinoma) in the upper section behind the nasal cavity, oropharyngeal carcinoma (oropharyngeal carcinoma) in the area of the palate, base of the tongue and tonsils, and hypopharyngeal carcinoma (hypopharyngeal carcinoma) near the junction with the oesophagus.

The disease belongs to the group of head and neck tumours and usually originates from the cells of the mucous membrane, which multiply uncontrollably and displace healthy tissue.

The most important risk factors are long-term tobacco and alcohol consumption. Infections with certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) or chronic irritation of the mucous membrane can also favour the development of the disease.

Pharyngeal carcinoma symptoms: If you have these symptoms, you should definitely have yourself examined

The symptoms of pharyngeal carcinoma depend greatly on the section of the throat in which the tumour develops and how advanced the disease is. Initially, the signs often remain unspecific and are easily overlooked. However, if a change in the throat or pharynx persists over a longer period of time or recurs, you should have it checked out by a doctor. We can differentiate between possible causes and - if necessary - treat them at an early stage.

It is typical to feel as if a small lump or foreign object is lodged in the throat, even though nothing is visible there. The discomfort can occur on one side and sometimes radiates into the ear.

Unlike a common sore throat, the pain does not subside after a few days, but persists for weeks. Medication, gargle solutions or household remedies do not bring any improvement in this case. This persistent discomfort arises because the tumour irritates the surrounding tissue and exerts pressure on the nerves or mucous membrane.

Detecting throat cancer: How is throat cancer diagnosed?

Comprehensive diagnostics at our ENT clinic in Frankfurt help to recognise and treat throat cancer at an early stage. The first step begins with a detailed discussion about symptoms, their duration and possible risk factors such as smoking or alcohol consumption. We then examine your mouth and throat with the help of a small mirror and a flexible Endoscope camerawhich also makes deeper areas visible.

If we notice any changes to the mucous membrane or lumps, a tissue sample (biopsy) is usually taken. Only a histological examination in the laboratory can show with certainty whether it is a malignant change.

Imaging procedures such as CT or MRI can also be used. They help to determine the exact extent of the tumour and identify possible lymph node or organ involvement (metastases). This provides a complete picture of the disease, which serves as the basis for further treatment planning.

The aim is to completely remove the malignant tissue while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Different surgical procedures are used depending on the location of the tumour.

Smaller tumours can often be removed in a minimally invasive way, e.g. using an endoscope or a laser. These gentle techniques enable precise tumour removal through the mouth without the need for large external incisions. In the case of more advanced findings, however, an open surgical approach may be necessary so that the tumour tissue can be completely removed.

In some cases, neighbouring lymph nodes in the neck area are also removed during the procedure to rule out possible metastases.

Radiotherapy is a key treatment option for throat cancer and can be used as a stand-alone therapy or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. Its aim is to destroy cancer cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue.

Modern radiotherapy methods - such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) - allow the radiation dose to be controlled with pinpoint accuracy. This allows the radiation to be concentrated precisely on the tumour area. Sensitive structures such as the salivary glands, spinal cord or larynx remain largely protected.

In early tumour stages, radiotherapy can often completely eliminate the cancer and make surgery unnecessary. In more advanced cases, it is used to destroy remaining tumour cells after an operation or to slow down tumour growth.

Temporary side effects may occur during treatment - for example, difficulty swallowing, irritation of the mucous membrane or temporary loss of taste. Careful accompanying therapy and regular aftercare help to alleviate these symptoms and support the healing process.

Chemotherapy is often used to treat throat cancer in addition to radiotherapy or surgery. It uses special drugs (known as cytostatics) that inhibit the growth and division of cancer cells or kill them completely. As tumour cells divide faster than healthy cells, they are particularly sensitive to these drugs.

As a rule, chemotherapy is used as an accompanying treatment to radiotherapy (radiochemotherapy), for example. This combination allows the two procedures to reinforce each other: the radiation directly destroys the tumour tissue, while the medication makes the cancer cells more sensitive to the radiation. This significantly increases the effectiveness of the therapy.

In the case of advanced or metastatic tumours, chemotherapy also serves to slow tumour growth, alleviate symptoms and maintain quality of life.

Typical side effects such as nausea, tiredness, irritation of the mucous membranes or hair loss occur because healthy cells can also be affected for a short time.

The therapy is always customised and closely monitored in order to keep the burden as low as possible.

These concepts are becoming increasingly important in the fight against throat cancer. They are directed against certain properties of cancer cells or activate the body's own defence system. This can often fight the tumour cells particularly effectively.

So-called checkpoint inhibitors are used in immunotherapy. These drugs block signalling pathways that cancer cells use to "switch off" the immune system. If this blockade is removed, the body's own defence cells can recognise and attack the tumour cells again. Immunotherapy is primarily used for advanced or recurring tumours when other treatments have been exhausted or are not sufficiently effective.

Targeted therapies work differently: they attack specific structures or growth mechanisms of the cancer cells, e.g. certain receptors on their surface. A well-known example is the use of antibodies against the so-called EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor), which is overactive in many head and neck tumours.

Both forms of therapy are considered important advances because they are even more precise and largely spare healthy cells. Regular check-ups and careful medical supervision are crucial in order to optimally control the effect and possible side effects.

Functional rehabilitation plays a crucial role following treatment for throat cancer - especially after surgery or radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The aim is to gradually restore natural abilities such as swallowing, speaking and adequate food intake.

Swallowing therapy helps you to train the muscles in the throat and pharynx area. Through special exercises, you will learn to safely coordinate movements when eating and drinking and reduce the risk of choking.

Speech therapy (speech therapy) helps to compensate for changes in the voice or articulation. This allows you to regain your vocal resilience and intelligibility when speaking. This is an important step towards being able to communicate actively again in everyday life.

If swallowing is still restricted or there is weight loss, additional nutritional counselling may be useful. Specialists will show you how a balanced, well-tolerated diet can support your recovery and provide you with new energy.

These rehabilitative measures make a significant contribution to maintaining your quality of life after cancer treatment and gradually returning to your normal everyday life.

A sudden feeling as if the ground is swaying under your feet or everything is spinning can be unsettling. Vertigo is one of the most common types of dizziness and can have a major impact on everyday life and quality of life.
This is a form of vertigo in which those affected have the feeling that they are swaying, rocking or standing on a boat - even though there is no actual movement. Nevertheless, there is a feeling of being off balance or not standing securely on your feet.

This insecurity is often exacerbated in open spaces, on bridges, escalators or in the dark.

It is particularly stressful that there is often no objective reason for a fall, but the feeling of instability is very real. Many people therefore withdraw from everyday life, avoiding public transport or longer journeys, for example.

The fear of losing control can become so strong that it triggers other symptoms - such as palpitations, sweating or breathlessness. This often results in a spiral of reciprocal stress: the anxiety intensifies the dizziness, and the dizziness in turn feeds the anxiety.

The Balance system is located in the inner ear and consists of three semicircular canals and the vestibule with the utricle and saccule. It registers movements and changes in the position of the body. The sensory impressions are transmitted to the brain via the vestibular nerve. There they are compared with impressions from the eyes and the muscles. Only this interaction enables a stable posture and safe orientation in space.

If there is a disruption within this system, the signals become unbalanced. The brain receives contradictory or incorrect information, which leads to feelings of dizziness.

The most common causes of vertigo in the area of the inner ear include

Vestibular neuritis

A sudden, usually unilateral inflammation of the vestibular nerve, which can occur after a viral infection, for example. It leads to severe dizziness, initially often with nausea and vomiting. Later, some sufferers are left with diffuse vertigo.

Meniere's disease

This disease of the inner ear causes excess pressure due to fluid accumulation (endolymph hydrops). Typical for Meniere's disease are paroxysmal rotary vertigo, hearing loss and Ringing in the ears. Persistent vertigo may persist between attacks.

Age-related changes

With age, the function of the vestibular system deteriorates - often accompanied by Hearing loss. These gradual changes often lead to increasing unsteadiness when walking, especially on uneven surfaces or at dusk.

Other diseases of the inner ear - such as a perilymphatic fistula, benign tumours (e.g. vestibular schwannoma) or labyrinthitis - can also disrupt the vestibular system and cause vertigo. A thorough diagnosis in our ENT clinic in Frankfurt is important in order to determine the exact cause and initiate targeted treatment.

Treating vertigo: Therapy depends on the trigger - precise diagnosis is necessary

Before an effective treatment of vertigo can take place, a thorough diagnosis is always the first step. This is because vertigo is not a disease in its own right, but a symptom with many possible causes. Targeted therapy is therefore only possible if the underlying disorder has been clearly recognised. Diagnostics can include the following steps:

Detailed anamnesis

The first step is a detailed discussion with you. This will involve, among other things

Type, duration and frequency of dizzy spells

Accompanying symptoms (e.g. nausea, hearing problems, visual disturbances)

Triggering situations (e.g. when standing up, in crowds)

Known pre-existing conditions, medication or psychological stress

Physical and neurological examination

This involves checking balance, coordination, eye movements, reflexes and posture. This provides indications of central or peripheral causes (e.g. in the inner ear or brain).

ENT medical examination

In our ENT clinic in Frankfurt we offer you comprehensive examinations for the Vertigo diagnostics to:

Ear microscopy: assessment of the external auditory canal and eardrum

Vestibular tests: e.g. positioning tests, head impulse test or Romberg test

Hearing tests (audiometry): to clarify whether hearing loss is present - especially if Menière's disease is suspected

Video Electronystagmography (Video-ENG): Measurement of involuntary eye movements to analyse the vestibular system

Imaging

If central causes (e.g. neurological diseases, tumours) are suspected, imaging may be necessary:

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the head

CT (computed tomography), especially if structural changes are suspected

Blood tests

If you have unclear symptoms or suspect metabolic disorders, vitamin deficiency or inflammation, a blood count can be helpful.

Cardiological clarification

In the event of possible circulatory causes (e.g. low blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia), your cardiologist will carry out an examination.

Ways to treat vertigo

The treatment of vertigo always depends on the underlying cause. Careful diagnosis in our ENT clinic in Frankfurt is therefore the first step. Only when it is clear what is causing the dizziness can targeted and effective treatment be initiated.

At our ENT clinic in Frankfurt, we are happy to be your first port of call for vertigo - especially if there is a suspected disorder of the vestibular organ in the inner ear.

If you have an inflammation of the vestibular nerve (neuritis vestibularis), for example, drug therapies with anti-inflammatory preparations or antivertiginosa are used. We can also prescribe special medication for symptom control in diseases such as Menière's disease.

If there is also benign positional vertigo, we can use certain positioning manoeuvres to reduce the triggering symptoms. Crystals in the inner ear and significantly alleviate the symptoms.

Another important component is the prescription of vestibular rehabilitation exercises. These special balance exercises help your brain to better process disturbed stimuli and retrain your balance. In some cases, a referral to specialised physiotherapy can be useful if additional muscular or functional factors are present.

We also use audiometric procedures to check whether there is also a hearing loss or another inner ear problem that could influence the symptoms.

The aim of all these measures is to specifically stabilise the balance system, normalise the processing of stimuli in the brain and noticeably improve your quality of life.

The larynx is a short, tubular section of the throat that lies between the pharynx and windpipe. It consists of several cartilage structures, including the easily palpable thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple). The inside of the larynx is lined with mucous membrane. Its main functions are

Control breathing
The larynx is part of the respiratory tract. It ensures that air can pass unhindered into the windpipe and thus into the lungs.

Enable tuning
The vocal folds (also known as vocal cords) are located inside the larynx. When you breathe out, the air causes them to vibrate - this is how the sound of your voice is created. The pitch and volume change depending on the tension and position of the vocal folds.

Protect the swallowing process
When swallowing, a movable lid made of cartilage - the epiglottis - closes the entrance to the windpipe. In this way, the larynx prevents food or liquids from entering the airways.

The larynx therefore fulfils several vital functions.

Laryngeal carcinoma: Malignant tumour in the throat area

Laryngeal carcinoma is a malignant tissue growth that can occur in various areas of the larynx - most frequently in the area of the vocal cords (glottic carcinoma), less frequently above (supraglottic) or below (subglottic). This is a form of head and neck cancer that usually arises from the mucosal cells of the laryngeal mucosa.

Tobacco and regular alcohol consumption are among the greatest risk factors for the development of laryngeal cancer. However, chronic irritation of the mucous membranes or an infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) can play a role.

Detecting laryngeal cancer: How is a laryngeal carcinoma diagnosed?

If you suffer from the above symptoms, you should definitely seek medical advice. In order to clarify the situation, we carry out ENT clinic in Frankfurt performs targeted diagnostics, which consists of several steps and enables a precise assessment.

Medical history and physical examination

We start with a medical consultation in which we ask about typical complaints such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or a foreign body sensation in the throat. This is followed by a thorough examination of the throat, mouth and pharynx.

Laryngoscopy (laryngoscopy)

The most important examination for assessing the larynx is the Laryngoscopy. This allows us to view your larynx directly using a mirror (indirect laryngoscopy) or a flexible camera (endoscopic laryngoscopy). This allows us to recognise changes to the vocal cords or other conspicuous areas of mucous membrane.

Biopsy

If there are any suspicious findings, a tissue sample (biopsy) is taken under local anaesthetic or a short anaesthetic. We have this examined histologically in the laboratory to clarify whether it is cancer and, if so, what type of cell is present (e.g. squamous cell carcinoma).

Imaging procedures

Other imaging procedures are also used to assess the spread of the tumour: CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the neck and chest allow us to clarify the size and extent of the tissue changes and possible lymph node involvement. If the findings are unclear or distant metastases are suspected, PET-CT can also be helpful.

Small tumours, especially on the vocal cords, can often be removed minimally invasively through the mouth using a laser - tissue-sparing and often preserving the voice.

In intermediate tumour stages, only part of the larynx is removed in order to preserve speech and breathing as much as possible.

Total laryngectomy (complete removal of the larynx)
In advanced cases, complete removal of the larynx may be necessary. Breathing then takes place permanently via a tracheostoma (artificial opening in the throat). In many cases, the voice can be restored with special aids (e.g. voice prosthesis).

Prevention is better than treatment: That's why ENT cancer screening at our ENT clinic in Frankfurt is so important

Cancers in the ear, nose and throat area can be treated more effectively the earlier they are recognised. For this reason, regular cancer screening is an important part of preventive healthcare. At our ENT practice clinic in Frankfurt, we offer comprehensive examinations to identify potential risks at an early stage and initiate appropriate measures.

Why is ENT cancer screening so important?

Cancers in the ear, nose and throat area, such as laryngeal, pharyngeal or oral cavity cancers, can develop gradually and often go unnoticed in the early stages. However, early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of recovery and often enables gentler treatment methods.

Typical symptoms of tumours in the nose

Tissue changes in the nose often cause unspecific symptoms at first, which can be attributed to more harmless illnesses such as a cold or an infection. Chronic sinusitis can resemble.

Depending on the location, size and type of tumour, various symptoms can occur:

Unilateral nasal obstruction
You should have it checked out by a doctor if the constipation is only on one side and persists for a long time.

Recurrent or persistent nosebleeds
Another symptom that may indicate a tumour: Nosebleed. In this case, it often occurs spontaneously - i.e. without any recognisable cause - and usually only on one side.

Secretion drainage with admixture of blood
The escaping Nasal secretion looks unusual and/or smells unpleasant.

Feeling of pressure or pain in the face
The symptoms occur particularly in the area of the cheeks, forehead or behind the eyes.

Headache
Headaches are particularly common with tumours that press on surrounding structures.

Diminished sense of smell
If the tumour affects the olfactory centre or the olfactory nerves, the ability to perceive scents often changes.

Swelling of the face or nose
Visible or palpable changes are further indications that you should have an examination.

Visual disturbances or double vision
They are possible if they spread towards the eye socket.

Numbness or tingling in the face
Sensory disturbances are an indication of nerve involvement.

Lymph node swelling in the neck area
In the case of malignant tumours, they are an indication of possible metastases.

The symptoms can vary greatly depending on the type and extent of the tumour. As many of these symptoms can also occur with benign tumours, a precise clarification should be carried out in our ENT clinic in Frankfurt take place.

Tumours in the nose: where can they form?

Tumours can develop in the following places in the nose:

Nasal cavity (cavitas nasi)

Lateral nasal wall
It is a common site for benign tumours such as inverted papillomas.

Nasal septum (nasal septum)
Melanomas or squamous cell carcinomas, for example, can develop here.

Nasal vestibule
This transitional area between the outer nose and the nasal cavity is also susceptible to tumours.

Paranasal sinuses (sinus paranasales)

Maxillary sinus (maxillary sinus)
One of the most common sinuses for the development of tumours, especially squamous cell or adenocarcinomas.

Frontal sinus (frontal sinus)
A tumour is less common at this location. However, the frontal sinus can be affected by osteomas, for example.

Ethmoid bone (ethmoid sinus)
Olfactory neuroblastomas often develop near the olfactory cells in the area of the upper ethmoid bone.

Sphenoid sinus (sinus sphenoidalis)
This is the deep sinus cavity. Tumours in this area are often symptomatic at a late stage.

Nasopharynx (nasopharynx)

Lymphomas or juvenile nasal angiofibroma can typically develop at this transitional area to the pharyngeal wall.

Tumours in the nose can be localised or grow into surrounding structures such as the eye socket, the base of the skull or the oral cavity.

ENT cancer screening in Frankfurt: Prevention is important in order to detect possible tumours in the nose and treat them in good time

Early detection of tumours in the nose plays a decisive role in successful treatment and healing. Many of these tissue growths initially cause unspecific symptoms or remain undetected for a long time, which can delay diagnosis. Regular ENT cancer screening examinations in our practice clinic in Frankfurt make it possible to identify such changes at an early stage and initiate appropriate therapeutic measures.

In this context, we carry out comprehensive examinations in order to recognise possible tissue changes at an early stage. For example, special Endoscopes which enable a detailed examination of the nasal cavity and neighbouring structures. In addition, we always carry out ultrasound diagnostics of the soft tissues of the neck, for example, to detect changes in the lymph nodes. If necessary, we initiate further diagnostic steps.

An additional focus of the screening examination is counselling on individual risk factors and preventive measures. This allows us to provide you with targeted information on lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of ENT tumours.

Fortunately, preventive healthcare is very important these days. From regular dental visits to skin cancer screenings to annual check-ups at gynaecological or urological practices, you certainly do a lot to protect your well-being and health. But while you're keeping an eye on many aspects of your body, you may be overlooking one area: the health of your ears, nose and throat. Ear, nose and throat care may not be as prominent in your life as other medical specialities, but it plays a crucial role in your body. After all, potentially life-threatening diseases such as cancer can also occur in this region of the body. In this blog post, we want to raise your awareness and let you know that the ENT cancer screening is very useful. We offer the various examinations in our ENT clinic in Frankfurt to.

What types of cancer are there in the ENT area?

Oral cavity carcinomas

These are malignant tumours that can develop in the oral cavity. They often occur on the tongue, lips, palate, gums or the inside of the cheeks. They manifest as ulcers and sores that refuse to heal and are often accompanied by pain or numbness in the mouth or on the lips. You may also experience swelling or hardening in the mouth or jaw area as well as problems chewing or swallowing. If you have pain in your ear or a sore throat that is not due to an infection, or notice changes in your voice or speech, you should also have this checked out.

Pharyngeal carcinomas

Malignant tumours can also develop in the throat area. They make themselves felt, for example, through a sore throat that does not go away or constantly worsens. In addition, there is often difficulty swallowing or the feeling of a lump in the throat. Changes in the voice, hoarseness and a persistent cough are also possible. Other symptoms of throat cancer include swelling in the throat or neck and earache that occurs without infection.

Kelhkopf carcinomas

These cancerous tumours develop in the larynx and are accompanied, for example, by persistent hoarseness, difficulty speaking and changes in the voice. In addition, there is often difficulty swallowing, a bloody cough, breathing difficulties or shortness of breath as well as swelling in the throat or neck.

Tumours of the nose

These include sinus tumours and nasal cancer, for example. In most cases, depending on the type and location of the tumour, there is a Nasal congestion or obstructed nasal breathing and repeated, severe nasal congestion. Nosebleed. In addition, a reduced sense of smell or even its loss can occur. Other possible symptoms of Tumours in the nose are facial pain, a feeling of pressure in the nose or sinuses and headaches that worsen or do not respond to the usual painkillers.

Tumours of the external neck, especially of the thyroid gland

Discomfort in the neck region can have various causes, including benign and malignant tumours. When it comes to the thyroid gland, tumours can occur both inside the thyroid gland (thyroid nodules) and outside the thyroid gland (e.g. in the surrounding tissue or lymph nodes). The most common symptoms include visible and palpable swelling in the neck, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or changes in the voice, breathing difficulties or shortness of breath, as well as pain in the neck that can radiate to the ear.

For which people is ENT cancer screening useful?

As a general rule, we recommend that every woman and man undergo ENT cancer screening in addition to the typical preventive health checks. It helps to recognise and treat potentially life-threatening diseases at an early stage. However, certain risk factors can increase the risk of ENT cancer. Screening can therefore be extremely important for certain groups of people. ENT cancer screening is particularly useful for:

People who consume tobacco

Smoking is a known risk factor for ear, nose and throat cancer, so you should have systematic check-ups if you regularly smoke a cigarette, pipe, etc.

People who regularly consume alcohol

Alcohol consumption is another risk factor for ENT cancer, especially in combination with smoking.

People who are occupationally exposed to certain carcinogens

People who work in industries where they are exposed to asbestos, formaldehyde or certain chemicals, for example, may also have an increased risk of ENT cancer.

People with precancerous lesions or a history of cancer

Precancerous lesions are abnormal-looking tissue changes that do not yet contain cancer cells, but may pose an increased risk of degeneration. These lesions can be located in various areas of the ENT tract, such as the oral cavity, pharynx, nose and paranasal sinuses, and larynx. People who suffer from these possible precancerous lesions or who have already had (ENT) cancer have an increased risk of recurrence. They should therefore have regular check-ups.

People with a family history of ENT cancer

Some forms of ENT cancer may have a genetic component. You should therefore be closely monitored if a blood-related family member is/was affected by such a disease.

ENT cancer screening in Frankfurt: how the screening works

ENT cancer screening usually involves a series of steps to detect precancerous lesions in the ear, nose and throat and potential signs of cancer. These include:

Medical history and physical examination

We start with a detailed medical history to gather information about your previous illnesses, symptoms, risk factors and family history. This is followed by a thorough physical examination, during which we check your throat, nose, mouth and larynx for signs of changes.

Endoscopic examination

We conclude a Endoscopic examination . This involves inserting a thin tube with a camera into your nose, throat or larynx to obtain a detailed view of your internal structures. This allows a thorough assessment of areas that are not easily visible to the naked eye.

Ultrasound

Using ENT ultrasound, we obtain detailed images of your internal structures, such as your sinuses, thyroid gland, lymph nodes and salivary glands. We can examine the anatomical structures for size, shape, texture and possible abnormalities.

Further investigations

In the event of abnormalities or for differential diagnosis, other imaging procedures such as X-ray, CT or MRI can be used. Laboratory diagnostics are also available.
