06 Apr Narrowing the nose: Rhinoplasty for a broad nose
The effect and expressiveness of our face is significantly influenced by the shape and size of the nose, among other things. By nature, however, the nose does not always fit the patient's face proportionally. If it is too large and too wide for the face, this can limit its attractiveness. A pronounced broad nose can cause feelings of shame and discomfort in those affected. Anyone who does not feel comfortable with the shape of their nose can consider a nose correction. In our ENT clinic in Frankfurt we can surgically narrow your nose.

What is a broad nose?
A broad nose is a common nose shape. This means that the nose is too wide in certain places. This can be at the base of the bridge of the nose or at the roof of the nose (which is disturbing when wearing glasses). It is also possible that the tip of the nose is proportionally too wide for the face.
This results in the appearance of a bulbous nasal tip. The lateral wings of the nose can also be affected. If the widening is very pronounced, the nose takes up too much of the face and becomes an "eye catcher".
Narrowing the nose with the open or closed technique
A wide nose that is too pronounced can be Nose narrowing treatment. In this special rhinoplasty procedure, the anatomy of the nose is altered to make it narrower. In this way, the nose can be adapted to the natural proportions of the face.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and takes around two hours. Depending on the individual case, the open or, in some cases, the closed surgical technique is usually used.
With the open technique, we make precise incisions on the outside of the nasal bridge in order to reach the inside of the nose. The incisions are usually no longer visible after the healing phase. With the closed technique, access to the surgical field is through the nostrils. This means that no external incisions are required. The open technique is usually used to narrow a nose.
Nose narrowing: this is how the procedure works
Narrowing the nose with surgery is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. The part of the nose that is too wide is decisive for the surgical technique. Dr Fischer will also consider the individual anatomy and constitution of the patient's nose. This results in different surgical variants:
Narrowing the nasal pyramid
This involves narrowing at the base of the nose. The nasal bones are first loosened, i.e. "broken" in a targeted and professional manner by pressing them together at the base. Dr Fischer then removes a central strip of tissue in order to narrow the bridge of the nose accordingly. The bridge of the nose is then narrowed by pressing the right and left nasal walls together.
Narrowing and modelling the tip of the nose
The shape of the tip of the nose depends on the shape of the underlying wing cartilages. In some cases, the lateral parts of these wing cartilages are too voluminous, large or curved. In the ideal shape of the nasal tip, however, the tips of the two wing cartilages are barely recognisable. In addition, they are not too wide and are approx. 3-4 mm apart. There are various approaches to narrowing the tip of the nose.
This includes, for example, removing some cartilage material from the central part of the wing cartilage. To do this, small triangles are removed from the tip. Dr Fischer then sutures the tips with fine suture material. In this way, the tips can be narrowed and the angles of the lateral wing cartilages to the centre ones can be adjusted. This makes the entire tip of the nose narrower. The prerequisite for this is skin that is not too thick. If it is particularly thick, inelastic or very rich in sebaceous glands, it may be difficult to achieve a beautifully defined nose tip.
Narrowing the nostrils (incl. nostrils)
The impression of a broad nose or a misshapen nose can also be created by bulging, curved nostrils. In this case, the adjustment is made by removing a strip of skin from the nostril. The nostrils can be reduced in size at the same time by making the incision right into the nostril opening.
Following the respective procedure, Dr Fischer sutures all incisions and, if necessary, places tampons through the nostrils. He tapes the bridge of the nose and nostrils with special plasters. He then applies a thermosplint, a tape bandage and internal splints to provide your nose with the best possible protection during the healing phase.
