What helps against tinnitus?

Tinnitus treatmentThe Tinnitus can be categorised into different groups: acute and chronic tinnitus as well as objective and subjective tinnitus. Acute tinnitus is when the ringing in the ears lasts no longer than three months. If it has been ringing and buzzing for longer than three months, the tinnitus is described as chronic.

In the case of objective tinnitus, there is always a clear underlying disease that forms a sound wave in the body. This sound is not only perceived by the patient, but can also be perceived by the ENT doctor can be measured in the examination. Causes can be high blood pressure, anaemia, vascular diseases (e.g. arteriosclerosis, here mostly calcification of the carotid artery) or tumours (also benign). A spasm of the middle ear muscle or tension in the neck can also trigger the annoying ringing in the ears.

If no real sound source can be detected in the body or the noise does not originate in the ear itself or the immediate surroundings, this is subjective tinnitus. The ringing, humming or hissing is then usually caused by abnormal activity of the nerve cells in the brain.

Treatment options for tinnitus

Therapy of objective tinnitus

As tinnitus has a physical cause, the underlying disease must be treated. Depending on what the trigger is, the Ear specialist another Tinnitus treatment suggest. This can range from an operation (e.g. for a tumour) to the administration of medication (e.g. for high blood pressure) and physiotherapeutic measures (tension). If the objective tinnitus is acute, vasodilators, e.g. cortisone, can also be administered.

Therapy of subjective tinnitus

Subjective tinnitus is not so easy to treat. As with phantom pain, there is no real cause that can simply be eliminated. It is different from a headache for which you take a pill. Every patient has to find their own individual way of coping with ringing in the ears.

In the acute stage, vasodilator medication and infusions are used, which often bring the desired relief or even cure.

If the tinnitus is already chronic, body therapies such as Tai Chi, biofeedback or hydrotherapy can be used. Magnetic or electrical brain stimulation methods, behavioural therapy approaches or combinations of several treatment options can also help. Here, acoustic stimulation is often used together with behavioural therapy. Alternatively, the Tinnitus therapy hearing aids are also used.

Patients often panic when their hearing suddenly changes and noises occur. But panicking doesn't help here. Therefore, the most important advice is: stay calm!

Tinnitus is not a medical emergency. In around 50 % of cases, hearing normalises on its own after minutes, hours or one to two days. If there is still no improvement after this period, you should come to our practice to find out the cause and initiate possible treatment, e.g. with cortisone.
