When you have a cold, you have certainly experienced for yourself how frustrating, annoying and exhausting it is when you cannot breathe freely through your nose.<\/p>\n<p>Some people suffer repeatedly or even permanently from this feeling of <a href=\"\/en\/nasal-congestion\/\">blocked nose<\/a>. In this case, you may have enlarged turbinates. Typical consequences can be<\/p>\n<h5>Mouth breathing<\/h5>\n<p>Those affected tend to breathe more through their mouth when they feel a blocked nose. This can lead to dryness in the mouth and throat and also affect swallowing.<\/p>\n<h5>Increased susceptibility to infections<\/h5>\n<p>The nasal cavity normally provides protection against pathogens. Incorrect nasal breathing can weaken this barrier. This can make it easier for viruses, bacteria and other pathogens to enter your body. In addition, impaired nasal breathing can cause mucus and fluids to accumulate in the sinuses and airways. This moist environment is an ideal breeding ground for pathogens and can, for example <a href=\"\/en\/treating-chronic-sinusitis\/\">Sinusitis<\/a> and other infections.<\/p>\n<h5>Sleep disorders<\/h5>\n<p>Obstructed nasal breathing can lead to sleep disorders such as <a href=\"\/en\/possibilities-of-snoring-therapy\/\">Snoring<\/a> and nocturnal breathing interruptions (sleep apnoea). This can lead to restless sleep, reduced sleep quality and daytime tiredness.<\/p>\n<h5>Reduction in physical performance and concentration disorders<\/h5>\n<p>The restricted air supply through the nose impairs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lungeninformationsdienst.de\/praevention\/atmung-was-ist-das\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxygen transport<\/a> in your body. For this reason, you may find physical activity more difficult. This is often accompanied by a feeling of rapid fatigue and breathlessness. If you are unable to breathe properly, this can also affect your mental performance, because: An adequate supply of oxygen to the brain is also important for optimum concentration and alertness.<\/p>\n<h5>Changes in pronunciation<\/h5>\n<p>If the nasal passage is blocked or narrowed, there is a tendency to breathe more through the mouth. This can lead to changes in the articulation and sound quality of the voice. When speaking, the nose also supports the resonance and modulation of your voice. Obstructed nasal breathing can therefore lead to a nasal-sounding voice. In addition, breathing can become shallower and less efficient during speech.<\/p>\n<h5>Changes in the sense of smell<\/h5>\n<p>The nose plays an important role in our sense of smell. Restricted nasal breathing can lead to olfactory disorders, which can impair the enjoyment of food and the recognition of dangers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div> \t<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"  style=\"height: 30px\" ><span\r\n\t\t\tclass=\"vc_empty_space_inner\">\r\n\t\t\t<span class=\"empty_space_image\"  ><\/span>\r\n\t\t<\/span><\/div>\r\n\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>One possible cause of restricted nasal breathing: enlarged turbinates<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/enlarged-turbinates-and-their-treatment-options\/\">Nasal concha<\/a> are bony structures in the nose that are covered with mucous membrane. They play an important role in air flow and filtering the inhaled air. Normally they are thin and have a structure that looks like lamellae or fan-shaped lobes. However, due to e.g. <a href=\"\/en\/allergy-treatment-frankfurt\/\">Allergies<\/a>They can swell immensely in the case of infections, inflammatory diseases or anatomical conditions. Enlarged turbinates can narrow the space for airflow in the nose. The result is restricted nasal breathing.<\/p>\n<p>These so-called <a href=\"\/en\/turbinate-hyperplasia\/\">Nasal concha hyperplasia<\/a> can cause further complaints such as recurrent sinusitis, snoring or noisy breathing.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div> \t<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"  style=\"height: 30px\" ><span\r\n\t\t\tclass=\"vc_empty_space_inner\">\r\n\t\t\t<span class=\"empty_space_image\"  ><\/span>\r\n\t\t<\/span><\/div>\r\n\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>Laser nose surgery: Uncomplicated treatment of turbinate hyperplasia<\/h3>\n<p>No major surgery is required to treat enlarged turbinates. We can treat these findings with laser treatment. This is how the so-called <a href=\"\/en\/laserconchotomy-frankfurt\/\">Laser conchotomy<\/a>\u00a0from:<\/p>\n<h5>Preparation<\/h5>\n<p>We clean your nose. You can go home again.
