What is sudden deafness?

With a sudden deafness a sudden, usually one-sided, collapse of the Hearing losswhose exact cause often remains unclear. It can be triggered, for example, by circulatory problems in the inner ear. The inner ear, or more precisely the cochlea, is dependent on a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which are supplied via tiny blood vessels. If this supply is disrupted, the sensitive hair cells, which are responsible for converting sound into electrical signals, can no longer work properly.

Inflammatory processes, stress, viruses or a dysregulation of the immune system are also possible causes. A sudden loss of hearing is often accompanied by ringing in the ears (Tinnitus) or Dizziness as the inner ear is also responsible for balance. Without prompt treatment, permanent damage can occur, which is why you should always take sudden hearing loss seriously.

Recurrent sudden hearing loss: what you need to know

Recurrent acute hearing loss is when you repeatedly experience a clearly audible Hearing loss in the same ear or both ears. The hearing loss usually occurs unexpectedly and without any recognisable external triggers. The symptoms can be similar for each incident, such as a significant hearing loss, a feeling of pressure in the ear, tinnitus or dizziness.

From a medical point of view, a recurrent hearing loss occurs when the hearing ability is initially restored after a previous incident, but then recurs weeks, months or years later. This is often associated with a persistent circulatory disorder in the inner ear, recurring stress or other underlying conditions such as autoimmune disorders or problems with the cervical spine.

What are the health risks of recurrent hearing loss?

Permanent hearing damage
Repeated hearing loss increases the risk that hearing ability will not fully recover. Repetitive circulatory disorders can irreversibly damage the hair cells in the inner ear.

Chronic tinnitus
If hearing loss recurs, there is a risk that the accompanying ringing in the ears will become chronic. This can put a considerable strain on everyday life and lead to sleep disorders or concentration problems.

Dizziness and balance disorders
As the inner ear is also responsible for balance, recurrent damage in this area can cause dizziness and thus disrupt balance. This can increase the risk of falls.

Psychological stress
Frequent hearing loss can be accompanied by anxiety, uncertainty and stress - especially if there is no clearly recognisable cause. The constant worry of another incident can limit quality of life.

Increased risk of permanent hearing loss
Each additional hearing loss can increase the risk of long-term hearing loss.

Concomitant diseases
Recurrent hearing loss can indicate underlying diseases such as autoimmune disorders or vascular problems. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to further health complications. It is therefore important to have such health problems medically clarified.

What does hearing loss mean?

Hearing loss refers to the limitation or loss of the ability to perceive sounds and tones in their full range and volume. There are different degrees and types of hearing impairment. They range from mild hearing loss to deafness. Hearing loss can be a temporary or permanent problem and can affect both One ear as well as both. This condition can significantly impair communication and quality of life. Those affected often have difficulty following conversations or hearing warning signals and music.

The different degrees of hearing loss

There are different levels or degrees of hearing loss, which can be categorised according to the severity of the impairment. There are four main categories:

Mild hearing loss

People with mild hearing loss may have difficulty hearing soft sounds or conversations in noisy environments. They may miss some words or details in conversations if the background noise is high.

Moderate hearing loss

Those with moderate hearing loss find it more difficult to understand conversations - especially in noisy environments or in larger groups. They may need hearing aids.

Severe hearing loss

People with severe hearing loss have considerable difficulty understanding normal conversations, even when loud voices are used. They are often dependent on sign language, special hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Deafness

This is a complete loss of hearing. Those affected can no longer perceive sounds or noises. However, in some cases they can benefit from cochlear implants to restore some hearing ability.

Causes of hearing loss: Hearing loss that originates in the ear itself

There are various types of damage to the ear itself that can cause hearing loss. These include

Damage to the inner ear (cochlea)

The inner ear contains tiny Hair cellswhich convert sound waves into electrical signals that are then transmitted to the brain. Damage to these hair cells can lead to hearing loss. This can be caused, for example, by exposure to noise, infections or genetic factors. The effects of so-called ototoxic drugs are also possible. These drugs can unintentionally damage hearing. These ototoxic drugs include, for example, aminoglycoside antibiotics, chemotherapeutic agents or loop diuretics.

Damage to the middle ear (auris media, eardrum cavity)

The middle ear contains the three auditory ossicles hammer, anvil and stirrup. They transmit sound waves from the outer ear to the inner ear. Damage to or stiffening of these ossicles can hinder the transmission of sound and lead to hearing loss.

Damage to the external auditory canal

Blockages, foreign bodies or inflammation in the external auditory canal can block the transmission of sound and cause temporary hearing loss.

Perforation of the eardrum

A hole in the eardrum, which can be caused by infections, injuries or sudden pressure differences, for example, can also restrict hearing ability.

Dysfunction of the Eustachian tube

The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear with the nasopharynx and regulates the pressure in the middle ear. Permanent blockage or inflammation in this area, for example, are other possible causes of hearing loss.

The biological ageing process

With increasing age, the hair cells in the inner ear can degenerate, leading to a gradual deterioration in hearing ability. Advancing age is considered the most common cause of hearing loss.

Infections

Middle ear infections or viral infections can damage the inner ear and lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss.

Cholesteatoma

This is an abnormal accumulation of skin cells in the middle ear. This can damage the eardrum.

Anatomical anomalies

Congenital or acquired anatomical abnormalities in the ear or the auditory nervous system can also have a negative impact on hearing.

Otosclerosis

This is a disease in which the ossicles in the ear stiffen and prevent the transmission of sound waves.

Tumours

Benign or malignant tumours in the ear or in the auditory nervous system can disrupt the normal function of the auditory system.

Causes of hearing loss: Other factors not directly related to the ear

It is also possible that the hearing loss is not caused by the ear itself and its structures, but is related to other factors. These are, for example

Noise exposure

Exposure to loud noises over a long period of time can damage the hearing and lead to noise-induced hearing loss. This can be caused, for example, by working in noisy environments, loud music or the sound of firearms.

Genetic factors

In some cases, hearing loss can be linked to genetic predisposition. There may be family predispositions to hearing problems that are passed down from generation to generation.

Injuries or trauma

Head injuries or head trauma can damage the inner ear or the auditory nerves.

Hearing loss as a complication of other diseases

Certain diseases and health conditions such as Diabeteshigh blood pressure, heart disease and autoimmune diseases can affect hearing.

Cause of hearing loss: This is how we find out where your hearing loss comes from at our ENT clinic in Frankfurt

Determining the exact cause of hearing loss requires a thorough diagnostic examination at our ENT clinic in Frankfurt. The diagnostic procedure is usually as follows:

Medical history

The first step is to talk to you about your symptoms. We will ask you questions about your hearing loss, such as duration, severity and whether it occurs in one or both ears. We will ask you whether the hearing loss is gradual or sudden and whether there are any accompanying symptoms. Information on previous illnesses, medication, exposure to noise and family history of hearing loss are also relevant.

Physical examination

Now we examine the outside and inside of your ear to detect signs of infection, injury, structural abnormalities or other problems. We will also inspect your eardrum.

Hearing diagnostics

At our ENT clinic in Frankfurt, we have various test procedures available to check the functionality of your middle ear, inner ear and auditory pathway. We can also examine the vestibular organ in your inner ear. These diagnostic methods can be divided into subjective procedures that require your active participation (e.g. tonal audiometry) and objective procedures that do not require active participation (e.g. measurement of otoacoustic emissions). You can find out more about our examination methods here: Hearing and dizziness diagnostics Frankfurt

Depending on the suspected cause of the hearing loss, additional tests may be required, e.g. computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of your head and inner ear. Sometimes additional investigations by other medical specialities (e.g. cardiology or neurology) are also required. Once these examinations have been completed, we can better determine the cause and severity of your hearing loss.

Nevertheless, it has a profound impact on the lives of those affected. In this article, we will inform you about how hearing loss in one ear can occur and what we can do about it.

What is hearing loss?

Hearing loss refers to the partial or complete impairment of a person's hearing. There are different degrees and forms of loss, ranging from mild hearing loss to deafness. Hearing loss can occur for a variety of reasons. There are two main types of hearing loss:

Sensorineural hearing loss

This type occurs when the hair cells in the Cochlea or the associated nerves are damaged. Sensorineural hearing loss is usually permanent. Natural ageing, genetic factors or diseases such as Meniere's disease can cause it.

Line loss

The problem lies in the outer or middle ear, which cannot transmit sound efficiently to the inner ear. Loss of conduction can be caused by too much earwax, infections, injuries or anomalies in the ossicles, for example. Some of these causes are treatable.

Hearing loss in one ear: What does that mean?

Hearing loss can occur in both ears (bilateral hearing loss). However, it can also occur in only one ear. This means that the hearing in the right or left ear is impaired, while the hearing in the other ear is normal. As a result, those affected are less sensitive to sound sources or noises on one side or may not hear them at all. Hearing loss in one ear can present various challenges, including

Difficulties in recognising the direction of sounds

People with unilateral hearing loss may have difficulty determining the exact direction from which a sound is coming.

Problems in noisy environments

Understanding conversations in noisy environments is often more difficult for those affected, as the healthy ear cannot "filter" sufficiently and reduce disturbing background noise. This can even have social and emotional consequences. Some sufferers therefore feel isolated or uncomfortable in social situations.

<span

Unilateral hearing loss and sudden hearing loss: differences

Hearing loss in one ear and sudden deafness are two different medical conditions. Both can affect hearing, but have different causes and mechanisms.

Hearing loss in one ear

Hearing loss in one ear refers to an impaired ability to perceive or hear sounds in only one ear. This can be due to sensorineural hearing loss (damage to the hair cells in the inner ear or the associated nerves) or conductive hearing loss (problems in the outer or middle ear that do not transmit sound efficiently to the inner ear).

sudden deafness

Hearing loss, on the other hand, is a sudden, often unexplained decrease in hearing in one or both ears. This often occurs over hours or days and can range from mild to severe hearing loss. The exact cause of sudden hearing loss is not always known. Factors such as circulatory disorders in the inner ear, infections, inflammation or autoimmune reactions can play a role.

Risk of confusion in case of hearing loss in one ear and sudden hearing loss

While hearing loss in one ear can be a chronic or slowly progressive impairment, sudden hearing loss is a sudden and often distressing condition.

Both phenomena can easily be confused with each other for those affected - this is because sudden hearing loss, especially if it occurs in one ear, can lead to temporary or in some cases even permanent hearing loss.

If you experience sudden hearing loss, we advise you to seek urgent medical help and make an appointment at our ENT clinic in Frankfurt to be agreed. With a careful Hearing diagnostics we can determine the exact cause of your problems and take appropriate action.

Hearing loss can be treated in different ways depending on the cause, severity and your individual circumstances. In the case of conductive hearing loss, medical treatment (e.g. for infections) or surgical intervention (e.g. for anomalies) can bring improvement. If it is just a plug of earwax, we will carefully remove it using special tweezers and/or a suction cup. In this case, there is usually an immediate improvement. If it is a sensorineural hearing loss, hearing aids can help.

Pay attention to the degree of specialisation!

An ear specialist not "only" deals with classic ear diseases such as middle ear infections, but also carries out sophisticated diagnostics and treatments.

Dr Thomas Fischer offers in his ENT clinic in Frankfurt a detailed Hearing and dizziness diagnostics on. This includes hearing threshold tests, which are used to test the functionality of the middle and inner ear independently of each other. Impedance measurement is also part of the portfolio. It can be used to analyse the ventilation status of the middle ear. Dr Fischer performs the measurement in order to differentiate between various disorders of the middle ear. The BERA auditory nerve function test also provides an image of the auditory pathway in order to be able to categorise disorders anatomically. Finally, there is the DPOAE hair cell function test. It is used to monitor progress during therapy, e.g. in the case of sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, noise trauma or toxic inner ear damage.

The ear is not only there for hearing, but also houses the organ of balance. Different forms of vertigo can be determined using video ENG.

Based on the examinations, Dr Thomas Fischer can develop a suitable therapy for you. This includes, for example Hearing loss and tinnitus therapy or the individual Dizziness therapy.

Dr Thomas Fischer also regularly performs plastic surgery. This includes not only Functional plastic nose surgerybut also ear corrections. As part of otoplasty, he surgically treats existing changes in the shape of your auricle, such as protruding ears.
Circulatory disorders

Also in the Ear there may be circulatory problems. This results in a dull feeling and the ear feels numb - similar to a foot that has fallen asleep. The blood vessels that supply the ear are very fine. Accordingly, they are very sensitive and a disturbance can quickly become noticeable. In addition to deafness, there are often other symptoms such as hearing loss, ear pressure, ringing in the ears, dizziness and nausea. However, it is usually difficult to determine the actual causes of the circulatory disorder in the ears. In many cases, various factors interact, such as deposits in the arteries. If blood fats and calcium clog the blood vessels, the fine branches in the ear (and other areas) cannot be sufficiently supplied with blood. However, skull injuries or blockages in the cervical spine can also impair the proper blood supply to the ear. Stress can be another cause. General risk factors are advanced age, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, high blood lipid levels, obesity, smoking and frequent alcohol consumption.

What are the causes of sudden hearing loss?

There are several factors that can play a role, such as a circulatory disorder in the inner ear, which is why the term "ear infarction" is also used in this context. Inflammation or viral infections can also lead to sudden hearing loss. In many cases, high levels of psychological stress, as can occur in the case of private or professional stress, can also lead to or contribute to the development of sudden hearing loss. Triggers of a physical nature are also possible. These include, for example, problems with the cervical spine or the surrounding muscles. However, the cause of the hearing loss often remains unclear.

How can sudden hearing loss be treated?

It is important that you have yourself examined by us if you experience the above symptoms. This is the only way we can recognise sudden hearing loss in good time. The chances of recovery are high.

After we have carried out special analyses (Hearing diagnostics/audiometric testing) have confirmed the diagnosis, we begin treatment. Infusion therapy with cortisone is possible here in order to restore microcirculation in the inner ear. In addition or as an alternative, we offer medication in tablet form. If neither the infusion therapy nor the administration of tablets achieves the desired improvement, the so-called intratympanic cortisone injection can help. This involves anaesthetising the eardrum and injecting cortisone into the middle ear. The advantage here is that we achieve a significantly higher concentration of the medication in the cochlea or inner ear. The side effect rate of this treatment is very low.

We also advise you to avoid exposure to noise and stress as far as possible when treating sudden hearing loss. Massage and physiotherapy can be beneficial. Patients should stop or at least reduce physical exertion and factors that damage circulation, such as smoking.

Tinnitus is an irregular hearing sensation on one or both sides. Patients hear noises for which there are no recognisable external sound waves. They usually perceive them as hissing, beeping, whistling or ringing.

There are two types: subjective and objective tinnitus. In the subjective variant, only the person affected perceives the noises. With objective tinnitus, which occurs more rarely, we can also hear the noises through a stethoscope.

However, functional disorders of the cervical spine and shoulder/neck muscles, functional disorders of the temporomandibular joint (CMD) or neurological diseases such as acoustic schwannoma.
How can tinnitus be treated?

Before treatment can begin, the causes or the underlying disease with which the tinnitus is associated must be determined. It is therefore possible that investigations of the surrounding area are necessary in order to recognise the exact cause. In some cases, it is therefore necessary to work together with an internist, cardiologist, dentist, orthopaedist or neurologist.

After a detailed diagnosis, we begin treatment based on the initial findings. This means that the underlying disease should be treated. The therapy therefore ranges from the administration of medication (antibiotics for inflammation, cortisone for sudden hearing loss, antihypertensives for high blood pressure, etc.) to physiotherapeutic measures or CMD therapy.

As you can see: A sudden loss of hearing is not the same as tinnitus - even if there are some similarities between the two. Tinnitus is a symptom that can occur with sudden hearing loss. If the sudden hearing loss is treated or improves, the acute tinnitus subsides. In some patients, however, the ringing in the ears persists and is considered to be a secondary symptom of sudden hearing loss.

The tympanic cavity is a cavity behind the eardrum in the middle ear. A slight negative pressure develops here from time to time. It can usually be equalised by swallowing or yawning. In some cases, e.g. due to a cold, secretions can accumulate in the tympanic cavity and can no longer drain away. This results in an unpleasant feeling of pressure and/or hearing loss. Sometimes viruses and bacteria also enter the ear area via the secretions, which can lead to an inflammation of the middle ear. If the secretions do not drain away on their own within a few days, treatment is required at our practice. We use the so-called tympanostomy tube to drain the secretions.

It is presumably caused by excess pressure that manifests itself there. The disease cannot be cured, but with the right treatment for Meniere's disease, we can reduce the severity and frequency of the attacks.

Changes in the inner ear due to Menière's disease

Prosper Menière, a French physician, described inner ear disease as early as 1861. It was therefore named after him. According to current knowledge, there is still no clear cause for Meniere's disease. Scientists associate various factors with the occurrence of inner ear disease. These include frequent viral infections (e.g. herpes virus), immunological diseases, injuries, hormonal disorders, circulatory disorders and a family predisposition.

The most popular theory is that of changes in the inner ear. It houses the cochlea and the organ of balance, as well as two different fluids: the perilymph and the endolymph. They are in a sensitive balance and characterise the function of the organ. In Meniere's disease, the resorption of the potassium-rich endolymph in the inner ear appears to be disturbed.

<span

This causes too much fluid to accumulate, which increases the pressure in the inner ear (endolymphatic hydrops). This is probably due to the fact that the inside of the cochlea is lined with a membranous membrane - the Reissner membrane - which tears here and there due to the high pressure. However, the thin cell membrane is equipped with sensory cells for hearing and balance.

It also separates the perilymph and the endolymph. The tears cause the two fluids to mix, which disturbs their balance. Furthermore, the tears lead to a sudden change in the pressure conditions in the ear. This results in a malfunction of the sensory cells. This explains the symptoms of Menière's disease.

Rotational vertigo

Typical for Menière's disease is a strong Rotational vertigowhich occurs in attacks. Patients have the feeling that their surroundings are spinning around them very quickly - comparable to a ride on a merry-go-round. The vertigo attacks are sometimes even so severe that those affected have to lie down. Rotational vertigo often causes nausea, vomiting and even falls. Patients find this symptom particularly distressing as the dizziness occurs suddenly and without warning. It can last for hours or even days.

Tinnitus

In addition to the attacks of vertigo, around 90 % of Meniere's disease patients suffer from ringing in the ears. They hear a buzzing, whistling, hissing or ringing that has no localisable source - i.e. does not exist objectively. In Menière's disease, the Tinnitus often low-frequency. This means that the ringing in the ears tends to be perceived as low-pitched. In addition, there is often a humming, rushing noise.

Hearing loss / hearing impairment

The third typical symptom of Meniere's disease is hearing loss, which usually only affects one ear. Patients hear significantly worse, especially in the lower frequency range. Usually only one ear is affected, but as the disease progresses, the hearing loss can also spread to the second ear. Complete deafness is even possible.

In addition to this characteristic triad, other symptoms can also occur. For example, those affected often become pale and sweaty. Their eyes may start to tremble (nystagmus).

How we can treat the disease

Meniere's disease is very stressful for patients, as the attacks occur suddenly. Especially for older patients, who already have an increased tendency to fall, torsional vertigo is particularly dangerous. The aim of Meniere's disease therapy is to reduce the symptoms during an acute attack and to prevent new attacks. There are various options for this:

We achieve good results with anti-dizziness medication (antivertiginosa). There are various active ingredients (e.g. dimenhydrinate or, in particularly severe cases, diazepam). Patients take them to combat the acute attack of dizziness and against the nausea/vomiting. We recommend that patients carry the tablets with them at all times so that they can react immediately in the event of a sudden attack.

In addition to acute treatment, Ménière's disease therapy also aims to reduce the number of attacks that occur. Here, too, we can use various medical agents, such as betahistine. With the right dose, customised to the patient, the occurrence of symptoms can be significantly reduced. The medication does not have to be taken at a high dose on a permanent basis: After six months to a year, we can try to slowly reduce the dose.

Intratympanic corticosteroid therapy with the anti-inflammatory cortisone is also suitable as a preventive measure. Under local anaesthetic, we inject the medication through the eardrum into the middle ear. This allows it to reach the inner ear, where it can exert its anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor effects.

Another, albeit radical, option for treating Meniere's disease is to "switch off" the vestibular organ. This is possible by administering medication. This involves injecting a specific antibiotic into the middle ear, which renders the organ of balance in the inner ear non-functional. Surgical intervention is also an option. However, this form of treatment can have serious side effects, such as hearing loss, deafness or a complete loss of the sense of balance.

If dizziness occurs repeatedly, suddenly or for no recognisable reason, it is possible that something is out of balance in your body.

There are different types of dizziness

Would you have thought that there isn't just one type of con? Take a look at how the different types are described:

Vertigo
Swaying while standing - like reeds in the wind - is how swaying vertigo is described. Those affected often also have the feeling that their surroundings are swaying back and forth.

Lift vertigo
You probably remember the feeling of standing in a lift and being pulled up. Some people experience this even without a lift. This is known as lift vertigo.

Rotational vertigo
"It's spinning!" Patients have the feeling that their surroundings are spinning around them.

Dizziness dizziness
This dizziness often occurs with hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, but can also occur with eye problems or as a result of medication. Patients feel dizzy or even groggy.

Dizziness with a tendency to fall
These feelings can even go so far that patients feel as if they are going to collapse and tip forwards or sideways. Caution is required here, especially with older patients.

Vertigo
This is the name given to the feeling of dizziness that some patients experience when they are in an elevated position.

Travel sickness
Travelling by car, bus, train, plane or boat can also cause dizziness in some people.

Possible causes of dizziness

Sometimes the spinning dizziness described above comes on suddenly. It lasts for a few seconds and then disappears again. It is possible that "ear stones" are behind this, which are deposited in the semicircular canals of the inner ear and cause irritation. However, these attacks can also result from a dysfunction of the vestibular organ or the vestibular nerves.

Sudden attacks of vertigo, which are accompanied by spinning or swaying vertigo and last for seconds, minutes or even hours, are often caused by inflammation of the inner ear or middle ear or certain vascular changes. Circulatory disorders or vascular calcification can also be to blame for the dizziness.

A sudden drop in blood pressure is often accompanied by spinning dizziness that ends in fainting dizziness. This type of dizziness is common during puberty, but also in cases of nerve disorders or Parkinson's disease.

If vertigo lasts for days to weeks or even longer, this is an indication of a one-sided loss of the vestibular system. However, this dizziness can also be the result of an inflammation of the middle ear. Injuries to the base of the skull or the so-called Baro traumaThe air pressure, which can occur when diving or due to changes in air pressure when an aeroplane is landing, sometimes causes damage to the ear area and thus also triggers feelings of dizziness. Damage to the cervical spine can also cause dizziness if it has a negative effect on blood vessels and nerve tracts.

How does sudden hearing loss manifest itself?

A sudden hearing loss occurs very suddenly - within a very short time, the person affected hears significantly worse or nothing at all in one ear, or more rarely in both ears at the same time. In most cases, there is no pain. For patients, everything sounds strangely muffled, as if a cotton wool ball or foreign object were stuck in their ear.

Most people who suffer a sudden loss of hearing are accompanied by tinnitus. This manifests itself as an unpleasant humming, whistling or buzzing in the ear.

Sometimes sudden hearing loss is accompanied by dizziness or light-headedness.

What happens in the event of a sudden hearing loss?

As circulatory disorders of the inner ear are usually responsible for sudden hearing loss, this is also colloquially referred to as an ear infarction.

The inner ear is not supplied with sufficient oxygen and nutrients, which causes the fine hair and sensory cells in the inner ear to suffer.

Auditory stimuli are no longer picked up correctly and the ear can therefore only process them inadequately or pass them on to the brain.

This can manifest itself in mild hearing impairment, but also in complete hearing loss.

Causes of sudden hearing loss: How does sudden hearing loss occur?

Stress
Emotional stress and constant tension are not healthy for our bodies. If you literally have too much on your plate at work and/or in your private life, you run the risk of becoming ill. The constant pressure leads to an increased release of adrenaline in the body, causing the blood vessels to constrict. If this happens longer and more often, the blood supply to the inner ear, for example, is disrupted. This can lead to sudden hearing loss.

Acute illnesses
Bacterial infections, middle ear infections or viral infections can damage the auditory cells and impair blood flow to the inner ear. This increases the risk of sudden hearing loss - even if an infection has only recently been overcome.

Chronic diseases
Not only acute illnesses, but also chronic illnesses can be a possible trigger for sudden hearing loss. If other parts of the body are not working properly, a sudden hearing loss can be the result. This can be the case with pathological fluctuations in blood pressure, Metabolic disordersheart disease or vascular changes, but also spinal problems. Tension in the neck muscles or signs of wear and tear in the cervical vertebrae can also cause a sudden loss of hearing.

Lifting and carrying heavy loads
It's not the first thought when it comes to identifying the cause of an ear infection - but lifting and carrying heavy loads can affect hearing. The weight can damage the sensitive window on the inner ear, which connects the inner ear to the middle ear. This has negative effects: Sound waves are no longer transmitted correctly to the inner ear. Sometimes this leads to sudden hearing loss.

How is sudden hearing loss treated?

If a sudden hearing loss is suspected, we will first carry out a basic examination of the affected ear. This is followed by a hearing test and possibly a Measurement of the so-called otoacoustic emissionsto determine the extent and frequency range of the hearing loss. At the same time, the aim is to identify the cause of the hearing loss, e.g. whether the sudden hearing loss is a concomitant symptom of another illness.

Depending on the cause of the ear infarction, the treatment is determined.

As a rule, cortisone preparations are used, which have a decongestant and anti-inflammatory effect. They can be administered in the form of tablets or infusions.
