How protruding ears can develop

There are two typical causes for the development of sail ears:

• If the angle between Auricle and skull bones are greater than 30 degrees, the ear is said to be protruding.
• If the distance between the edge of the ear and the head is greater than 2.8 cm, the ears are also referred to as sail ears.

There are several possible causes for this deviation. In most cases, the genetic component also plays a role. This means that the children inherit the shape and relief of the ears from their parents - as well as other characteristics such as the Nose shape.

At our ENT clinic in Frankfurt, we can correct protruding ears with an ear correction. During the procedure, you will lie on your back with your head slightly elevated. We disinfect your face and hairline and cover everything except the surgical area with a sterile cloth.

To access the ear cartilage, we make an incision behind the ear. We use special surgical instruments to thin out the cartilage. This allows us to bring the ears into the correct position. We fix the newly formed cartilage with absorbable sutures and close the incision inconspicuously with a self-dissolving suture.

Ear correction Frankfurt: At what age is it possible to have ears corrected?

Parents of children with protruding ears would like to protect them from teasing and verbal abuse. This is why they often consider having their daughter or son's ears pinned at pre-school age. Ear corrections can usually be carried out between the ages of four and six. By this time, the cartilage has reached a size of around 70 per cent. It is also firm enough to be operated on. Of course, ear correction can also be performed during puberty or later. In principle, there is no upper age limit if the patient is in good health.

Ear correction for children: Please note!

Please do not decide over your child's head! Even if ear correction is possible at a young age, you should not have your child operated on because you want it. From a psychological point of view, surgery should only be performed if the child actively wants it. If the protruding ears do not bother the child, an otopexy is neither ethically justified nor legally permissible. This means that we do not operate on the child at the sole request of the parents.
