Which nose shapes can be corrected?

Oscar Wilde wrote with some knowledge of human nature as early as 1895: "Nothing is as difficult to accept as a big nose."

Nowadays, nobody has to put up with a "chunky tip", as aesthetic plastic surgery offers all kinds of possibilities to give everyone a harmonious nose. This is also shown by the global trend: rhinoplasty is the fourth most popular cosmetic surgery worldwide.

Why a nose job?

There are many reasons why people decide to undergo rhinoplasty surgery. It can be a nose that is too large or too long, crooked or even asymmetrical. If it does not fit proportionally into the face, it can become a major burden - and for good reason! The nose is a part of the body that strongly characterises the expression of our face. It cannot be hidden and can only be concealed to a limited extent with make-up.

And this is where we come in: With rhinoplasty, we bring about a positive change and help our patients to feel comfortable in their skin again and to go through life with pride.

Different nose shapes

The broad nose
It appears barrel-shaped and the nostrils are often not clearly visible. In terms of proportions, it appears too wide for the rest of the face. Not only the tip of the nose, but also the bony area, the base of the nose or the cartilaginous part of the bridge of the nose can be affected.
A broad nose can be congenital or result from injuries such as a punch to the face.

Depending on the findings, the broad nose can be corrected in various ways: If the bony bridge of the nose is the decisive factor, it is reduced in size. If the tip of the nose is too wide, it can be reduced using a special suture and incision technique. If the base of the nose is too wide, it can be narrowed by surgery.

The hooked nose
It is conspicuous and is often perceived as particularly unaesthetic: A hooked nose is characterised by a curved nose bridge and a nose tip that curves downwards. It can even be tilted so far downwards that it forms the lowest point of the nose, so to speak.

A hooked nose can be corrected by surgically removing cartilage or bone tissue. A visually appealing result can also be achieved by changing the position of the tip of the nose.

The snub nose
This nose shape can be described in just a few words: it is characterised by an upturned tip. The nose appears relatively short, which is why it is also known as a short nose.
The nose can be straightened with a plastic surgery procedure. This involves lowering the tip of the nose.

The crooked nose
In this case, the nose has a laterally displaced, oblique shape. Its axis is uneven and clearly leans to the left or right.
Often there is also a curvature of the nasal septum with obstruction of breathing. However, this nose shape also occurs as a result of accidents or injuries. For example, if the bony bridge of the nose has not healed straight after a fracture, a crooked nose can develop.

If the crooked nose is only caused by the bone, surgical straightening of the bony bridge of the nose is sufficient. If the nasal septum is affected by the crooked position, it must be straightened. The result is a straight nose with improved breathing.

The saddle nose
Insufficient cartilage tissue on the bridge of the nose causes a visible depression that resembles the shape of a saddle in profile. The nose appears broad and plump overall, the bridge of the nose is usually too short and the tip protrudes. A saddle nose is usually caused by an accident, previous surgery or inflammation.

The correction is a so-called reconstructive nose operation. The indentation on the bridge of the nose is filled with the body's own material (cartilage), which can be obtained from the nasal septum, the back wall of the auricle or the costal arch. As a saddle nose often impairs breathing, surgical correction is beneficial for the patient: After healing, the patient can breathe freely again.

The bumpy nose
It is the most common reason for rhinoplasty: a humped nose. In this case, the bones and cartilage along the bridge of the nose are excessively pronounced, giving the impression of a hump. The tip of the nose may be slightly curved downwards (similar to a hooked nose, only slightly so).

A surgical correction reduces the hump on the nose. To avoid creating a flattened bridge of the nose that looks artificial and operated on, the bony bridge of the nose usually has to be mobilised and the side walls pushed together. This creates a natural nose profile. The nose appears smaller overall. The downturned tip of the nose is pulled upwards. Thanks to innovative surgical techniques, this procedure is gentle and almost painless.
