Frequently asked questions about microneedling & mesotherapy

Anyone who is unhappy with the appearance of their skin texture and is considering treatment with microneedling & mesotherapy has many questions. What is microneedling?

Microneedling is an aesthetic treatment method in which we insert microneedles into your skin to deliberately create micro-injuries. These stimulate the natural regeneration of your skin by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Microneedling is suitable for improving skin texture (e.g. hyperpigmentation), reducing (acne) scars, rejuvenating the skin and reducing wrinkles. This is also referred to as collagen-inductive therapy or percutaneous collagen induction.

How does microneedling work?

We use a special microneedling device on your skin to induce certain positive reactions. The treatment is carried out as follows:

  • Cleansing the skin
Firstly, we cleanse your skin intensively to remove dirt, oil and make-up.
  • Anaesthesia
On request, we can apply a local anaesthetic ointment to the areas to be treated. This can minimise any unpleasant sensations that may occur during the treatment.
  • Microneedling treatment
We move over your skin with the special microneedling device. It looks like a kind of thick pen with needles attached to the tip. These needles penetrate the upper layer of your skin, creating harmless micro-injuries and stimulating your skin's natural healing process.
  • Application of active ingredients
Depending on what we are using the treatment for, we can apply special active ingredients to your skin, which can be used to treat your skin:

    • act against skin ageing and sagging facial contours.
    • combat mimic facial wrinkles.
    • Alleviate hyperpigmentation.
    • reduce the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars and stretch marks.

The tiny holes that we have made in your skin with the microneedling pen increase the absorption of these substances. The big advantage: they can penetrate deeper into the skin and develop their effectiveness better.

  • Aftercare
After the treatment, your skin may be reddened and irritated, similar to sunburn. You can treat it with soothing creams. We will be happy to advise you on this.

Which skin problems can be treated with microneedling?

Microneedling is a versatile aesthetic treatment method that we like to use in our practice in Frankfurt to improve various skin problems. These include

  • Scars and stretch marks
Microneedling can help to reduce the appearance of acne scars and other scars (e.g. from surgery) by improving skin structure and stimulating collagen production. Striae also often respond well to the treatment.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
Microneedling can also help to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles - particularly around the forehead, eyes, mouth and neck.
  • Hyperpigmentation
In the case of uneven skin pigmentation, freckles or age spots, the treatment can help to lighten the skin.
  • Reduce pores
Excess sebum production, hormonal changes, but also biological ageing processes and other influencing factors can lead to enlarged pores on the skin. With microneedling, we can reduce the size of your pores and make your skin appear smoother and more even.
  • Skin tightening
By stimulating collagen production, we can use microneedling to make your skin firmer and more elastic.
  • Dehydrated skin
Microneedling - and especially the intensive treatment with active ingredients afterwards - can help to moisturise your skin. This can make it appear smoother and more radiant.
  • Irregular skin structure
Microneedling can also help with uneven, rough skin texture and make it smoother.

How long does a microneedling session last?

The duration of a session depends on your individual needs and the area to be treated. As a rule, a microneedling session lasts between 30 minutes and an hour.

How many sessions are required for optimum results?

The number of sessions recommended depends on your individual skin problem, your wishes and the results you want to achieve.

For mild skin problems, a treatment series of three to four sessions may be sufficient. If the skin problems are moderate, four to six sessions are recommended. For severe skin problems, six or more sessions may be necessary. The intervals between the individual appointments should be around two to four weeks.

After the initial series of treatments, you can perform refresher treatments every 6 to 12 months to reinforce the results and keep the skin in good condition.

We decide how many appointments are necessary in your individual case on the basis of a skin analysis.

Are there risks and side effects with microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure - and like any treatment that involves damage to the skin (albeit controlled and intentional), it can have potential side effects. The following side effects can occur with microneedling:

  • Skin irritations
Short-term redness, swelling and skin irritation may occur after needling. However, these usually subside within a few hours to days.
  • Infections
The small punctures can lead to skin infections if you do not care for the tiny wounds according to our advice.
  • Scarring
In principle - although very rarely - undesirable scarring is also possible.
  • Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
Microneedling can lead to changes in skin pigmentation. Temporary dark spots (hyperpigmentation) or light spots (hypopigmentation) on the skin are possible after the treatment.
  • Allergic reactions
Allergic reactions to the products or active ingredients used during microneedling can occur. We therefore ask you in advance whether you have any known allergies.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
The skin may react more sensitively to sunlight after microneedling. Therefore, please use effective sun protection to protect your skin from damage caused by UV rays.

Is microneedling painful? Are there options for pain relief?

Although the procedure is usually well tolerated, it can be unpleasant for many people. How comfortable the treatment is for you depends, among other things, on your personal sensitivity to pain.

Some of our patients describe the feeling during treatment as stinging and burning - it reminds them of sunburn. However, the pain is usually only temporary and subsides quickly after each session.

But you don't need to worry about any discomfort. On request, we can apply an anaesthetic ointment to the treatment areas. This will significantly reduce your sensation of pain so that you will hardly notice the stitches.

How quickly do the results of microneedling become visible?

As a rule, there is no "drastic" change from one moment to the next. The effects occur gradually and develop gently over time. This is due to the fact that skin regeneration and collagen production take a few weeks to get going.

Can microneedling be combined with other aesthetic procedures?

If desired, we can combine microneedling with other aesthetic procedures at our clinic in Frankfurt:

What are the advantages of microneedling compared to other aesthetic treatments?

Compared to other aesthetic procedures, microneedling offers a number of advantages:

  • No to minimal downtime
While a surgical facelift or laser treatment is associated with downtime, this is not the case with microneedling. As a rule, you can return to your normal everyday life immediately after the treatment if you feel like it.
  • Versatility
Microneedling can be used to improve a variety of skin problems, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation problems, large pores and sagging skin. It can also be used on different skin types and colours.
  • Cost effective
Compared to surgical procedures or other invasive procedures, microneedling is significantly less expensive.
  • Stimulates natural collagen production
Microneedling stimulates your body's own collagen production, which leads to naturally improved skin firmness and elasticity.
  • Minimised risks
When performed properly - as in our practice clinic in Frankfurt - the risks and side effects of microneedling are generally low.
  • No removal of the top layer of skin
Unlike some chemical peels or laser treatments, microneedling does not remove the top layer of skin, which facilitates healing and recovery.

For whom is microneedling suitable and for whom is it not?

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that may be suitable for many people, but there are also some contraindications and factors that you should consider. For this reason, an examination and consultation will always take place before any treatment.

The treatment is generally suitable for people who

  • have no serious medical restrictions and are in good health.
  • have skin problems that may respond to microneedling.
  • Have realistic expectations of the treatment and understand that results are gradual and may vary from person to person.

Microneedling may not be suitable for you if you

  • have active skin diseases (e.g. acne, eczema or psoriasis).
  • suffer from open wounds, skin infections or herpes outbreaks.
  • are affected by bleeding disorders or are taking blood-thinning medication.
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What is the difference between microneedling and mesotherapy?

Microneedling and mesotherapy are two different aesthetic treatments that both aim to improve skin quality. However, they work in different ways and have different applications.

  • Treatment approach
    • Microneedling
In microneedling, we use a special device fitted with very fine needles. We guide these over your skin, creating tiny (harmless!) micro-injuries in a controlled manner. This procedure stimulates the natural regeneration of your skin and promotes the production of collagen and elastin. We use microneedling, for example, to improve skin texture, reduce (acne) scars and rejuvenate the skin.
    • Mesotherapy
During mesotherapy, we inject special active ingredients directly into your skin or the underlying tissue. The active ingredients unfold and can, for example, tighten the skin and improve the complexion.
  • Type of needles
    • Microneedling
Special microneedles are used, which can vary in length depending on the depth of the treatment. The needles penetrate your skin to create micro-injuries and stimulate skin regeneration.
    • Mesotherapy
We also use very fine needles for mesotherapy - but only one in syringe form. We use them to precisely inject certain active ingredients into your skin according to a specific pattern. These needles do not usually go as deep as the needles used for microneedling.
  • Invasiveness
    • Microneedling
The roller creates tiny micro-injuries in your skin, which can lead to minor bleeding. Needling is considered a minimally invasive treatment.
    • Mesotherapy
This form of skin therapy is also a minimally invasive treatment in which we inject substances directly into your skin. There are usually no open wounds or bleeding.

What does collagen stimulation mean?

Collagen stimulation refers to the process of stimulating and increasing the production of collagen, an important structural protein in the skin. Collagen is responsible for the firmness and elasticity of the skin. As we age, natural collagen production decreases, which can lead to sagging, wrinkling and loss of skin firmness.

With the various treatments we offer at our Goethe10 practice clinic in Frankfurt, we can stimulate your skin to produce more fresh, new collagen. This allows your skin to tighten itself from the inside out. This helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and make the skin look firmer and younger.

What is mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is a medical treatment method that was developed in France in the 1950s. It combines elements of Conventional medicinethe Alternative medicine and the Cosmetics. Using injections, we introduce special active ingredients into your middle layer of skin to treat various skin problems and revitalise your skin. The treatment can help with a variety of aesthetic problems.

How does mesotherapy work?

As part of mesotherapy, we administer small amounts of specific active ingredients directly into your skin or the underlying tissue. This is usually done using fine needles. This is the treatment procedure in detail:

  • Preparation
Firstly, we carefully cleanse your skin. If desired, we can apply an anaesthetic ointment to reduce any discomfort that may occur during the injections.
  • Mixture of active ingredients
We then put together a mixture of active ingredients that we customise to your specific needs. This mixture may contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, hyaluronic acid, peptides, enzymes or other substances that are suitable for improving your personal skin situation.
  • Injection
In the next step, we inject the mixture into your skin or tissue using fine needles. The injections follow a specific pattern. Depending on the application, this can include squares, lines or circular patterns.
  • Effect
The active ingredients that we inject into your skin should reach the affected cells and tissue directly in order to unfold their effect there. Depending on the type of treatment, they can tighten your skin, smooth wrinkles, even out hyperpigmentation or combat scars and stretch marks.
  • Aftercare
After mesotherapy, redness, swelling or slight bruising may occur at the injection sites. However, these usually subside after a short time. We will provide you with specific care instructions to help you achieve the best results and minimise possible complications.

Which aesthetic problems can be treated with mesotherapy?

  • Skin ageing and wrinkles
Mesotherapy can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by hydrating your skin, boosting collagen production and firming your skin.
  • Dehydrated skin
We can pamper thirsty skin by moisturising and nourishing it.
  • Scars
Mesotherapy can improve the appearance of scarred skin by promoting collagen growth and skin regeneration. In our practice in Frankfurt, we use mesotherapy for acne scars, hypertrophic scars and keloids, for example.
  • Stretch marks
Sog. Striae can occur when the elasticity of the skin is exceeded over a longer period of time. The connective tissue that supports the skin breaks under the strong stretching and leaves visible scars in the form of striae (e.g. on the stomach after pregnancy). Mesotherapy can help to make these stretch marks less visible.
  • Hyperpigmentation
With mesotherapy, we can treat uneven skin tones and hyperpigmentation. Special active ingredients lighten spots and even out your complexion.
  • Improvement of the skin structure
The treatment can also help to refine your skin texture and achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance.

How long does a mesotherapy session last?

The duration of a session depends on the problems being treated, the number of injections and your individual treatment plan. As a rule, a mesotherapy session in our practice in Frankfurt lasts between 30 minutes and one hour.

How many mesotherapy sessions are required?

The number of sessions required will vary depending on your individual needs, the severity of the problems to be treated and the desired result. As a rule, four to six sessions at intervals of two to four weeks are required to achieve a significant improvement in skin quality - in some cases more, in others less.

Are there any risks or side effects with mesotherapy?

As with most medical or aesthetic procedures, there are potential risks with mesotherapy - even if they are usually very low. The potential side effects of mesotherapy include

  • Pain
During the injections, there may be pain or burning at the injection sites. However, if desired, we can apply a local anaesthetic ointment to minimise the pain.
  • Redness and swelling
The treated areas may be temporarily reddened and/or swollen after mesotherapy. However, this usually subsides on its own within a few hours or days.
  • Bruising
Bruising may form at the injection sites, which may persist for several days to weeks until they fade.
  • Infections
Although infections are very rare, there is a risk of infection at the injection sites with every injection treatment.
  • Allergic reactions
In rare cases, allergic reactions to the injected substances or components may occur.
  • Unsatisfactory results
Mesotherapy may not achieve the desired results in some patients. The effectiveness may vary from case to case.

To minimise the risks and achieve the best results, it is important to choose a well-trained and experienced doctor or specialist for mesotherapy. Dr Fischer from the Goethe10 Practice Clinic in Frankfurt is your experienced contact person. He or she will examine you in detail before the treatment and inform you about the procedure, the expected results and possible side effects.

Is mesotherapy painful? Are there options for pain relief?

Pain sensations are always subjective. What may be painful for one person may feel completely different for another. If you are worried that the treatment might be unpleasant for you, please let us know. We can then apply a special local anaesthetic (e.g. an anaesthetic ointment) to the treatment area before mesotherapy.

What are the advantages of mesotherapy compared to other aesthetic treatments?

  • Minimally invasive treatment without downtime
Compared to invasive procedures such as surgery, mesotherapy does not require any incisions or stitches, which reduces the risk of complications. In general, mesotherapy does not require a long recovery period. If you feel well enough, you can resume your normal activities immediately after the treatment. The side effects that may occur (e.g. redness and swelling) do not usually affect your activities.
  • Targeted treatment
Mesotherapy enables targeted treatment of specific areas.
  • Adaptability
We can customise the treatment to your individual needs and goals because: We use different active ingredients in different concentrations tailored to your skin's needs.
  • Versatility
We can use mesotherapy in our practice in Frankfurt to treat a wide range of skin problems.
