Acne Frankfurt

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technology provides you with a new and effective method of acne treatment.

Acne treatment in Frankfurt

IPL technology can be used either as an alternative or as a supplement to conventional acne treatment. IPL treatment can be used at any stage of acne.

With the IPL treatment several sessions (6-8 sessions) are necessary, the interval between sessions is approx. 1 month. The IPL treatment reduces the inflammatory skin changes. The acne lesions can thus recede more quickly and scarring can be prevented under certain circumstances.

The acne treatment can be combined very well with fruit acid peelings.

We would be happy to advise you on a care system from dermalogica that is customised for acne.

Latest device technology

In contrast to many devices that do not achieve the expected success, we work with a new technology that enables a relatively high energy input by splitting the light pulses into several so-called daughter pulses. The pulse length and pause times can also be precisely adjusted. This allows for more intensive treatment that is gentle on the skin and tissue. Depending on the respective indication, treatment is carried out at different wavelengths using a special treatment head. This is also very important in order to achieve the desired success.

After the treatment

To protect against UV radiation and pigment damage, avoid direct and unprotected exposure to the sun both before and after the procedure.

What is acne?

Acne is one of the most common skin diseases worldwide. It leads to the formation of severe pimples as well as pustules, papules and blackheads. These blemishes usually appear on the forehead, cheeks and chin. The décolleté and back can also be affected.

How does acne occur?

Acne is mainly caused by blockage of the ducts of the sebaceous glands (hyperkeratosis) in combination with an overproduction of sebum (seborrhoea). When the sebaceous glands become keratinised, the sebum builds up and blackheads form. These can break open and attract bacteria that break down the sebum. This produces cleavage products that can trigger inflammatory reactions. The result: after a short time, pimples form on the affected areas.

What types of blemishes are common with acne?

  • Blackheads
Comedones are caused by clogged hair follicles. There are two types:

    • Open blackheads (blackheads)
They appear as small, dark spots on the skin. The dark colour is not caused by dirt, but by the oxidation of sebum and skin cells that clog the pores.
    • Closed blackheads (whiteheads)
They appear as small, white or skin-coloured bumps and occur when the clogged hair follicle remains below the surface of the skin.
  • Pimples
These are inflammatory skin blemishes that occur when sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria become trapped in the pores. They are often red, swollen and can even be painful.
  • Pustules
If pimples become further inflamed and contain pus, they are referred to as pustules. They appear as red, swollen bumps with a white or yellow centre.
  • Papules
The firm, raised skin lesions are usually less than one centimetre in size. They are often red and can be sensitive or painful, but do not contain pus.

Who is affected by acne?

Acne mainly occurs in adolescents (puberty acne). Blemished skin is related to physical and hormonal changes during this phase of life. However, adults can also develop acne.

What is late acne all about?

Late acne, also known as acne tarda, usually occurs from the age of 25. It often affects women who suddenly develop blemished skin with blackheads and spots. Stopping the pill can favour these blemishes, as can pregnancy or the menopause. Other triggers for late acne can be stress, unhealthy lifestyle habits, incorrect skin care and side effects of medication.

What are the causes and risk factors of acne?

  • Male sex hormones (androgens)
  • Overactive sebaceous glands
  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Incorrect diet (too high in fat and sugar)
  • Disposition
  • Stress and severe psychological strain
  • Side effects of medication (e.g. neuroleptics, psychotropic drugs, antibiotics or cortisone)
  • Anabolic steroids

What types of acne are there?

  • Acne vulgaris
This is the most common and best-known form of acne, which is triggered by hormonal changes during puberty. There are three subtypes:

    • Acne comedonica
A mild form that only affects the face and mainly causes blackheads, which can become inflamed.
    • Acne papulopustulosa
This is the moderately severe form, in which inflamed pimples appear alongside blackheads.
    • Acne conglobata
The most severe form is associated with large inflammatory lumps that can leave visible scars.
  • Contact, cosmetic or chlorine acne
This type of acne is similar to an allergic reaction of the skin and is caused by intolerance to certain substances or cosmetic ingredients.
  • Medication acne
Long-term treatment with certain medications such as bromine-containing sleeping pills and tranquillisers, vitamin B preparations, cortisone-containing ointments, creams and tinctures can cause acne or late acne. The skin problems usually disappear once the medication is discontinued.
  • Doping acne
This acne variant occurs due to the frequent consumption of doping substances that contain androgens and their derivatives (e.g. anabolic-androgenic steroids).

Is acne inversa a "real" form of acne?

The name can be confusing: Strictly speaking, acne inversa is not a classic acne that affects the sebaceous glands, but a disease of the sweat glands.

Acne inversa is characterised by extensive inflammation of the sweat glands and hair follicles, mainly in the armpits and genitals. The disease leads to lumps, abscesses, fistulas, frequent scarring and severe pain in the affected areas.

Without treatment, acne inversa can become chronic and significantly impair quality of life. Treatment is carried out with medication, but in many cases hospitalisation and surgical procedures are required.

What treatment options are there for acne?

Depending on the form and severity of your acne, various therapies can help:

  • Change of diet
  • Zinc intake
  • Regular cleansing in the beauty parlour
  • Use of special antibacterial cosmetics
  • Antibiotic creams or antibiotics in tablet form
  • Coloured light therapy/irradiation with selective UV light
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Vitamin A acid derivatives
  • For women: Birth control pill

How does chemical peeling work in acne treatment?

Chemical peeling uses highly concentrated and effective acids from various natural substances, such as salicylic acid (also known as beta-hydroxy acid or BHA acid). This acid, which is mainly found in willow bark, has been known for its effects for centuries. Salicylic acid is fat-soluble and is therefore ideal for treating oily and blemished skin. It reduces skin impurities, frees the pores from excess sebum, removes dead skin cells and minimises redness. It also promotes skin renewal, minimises large pores and can improve the appearance of acne scars.

Also Fruit acid peels can fight acne very well. They contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic or citric acid, which help to exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells and cleanse the pores. This can improve skin texture, reduce blemishes and minimise the appearance of acne scars. Fruit acid peels can also promote skin renewal and refine the skin's overall appearance.

How exactly can IPL treatment help against acne?

The IPL treatment (Intense Pulsed Light), which we offer in the Goethe10 Practice Clinic in Frankfurt can help you with acne in various ways:

  • Reduction of inflammation
IPL uses broadband light that penetrates deep into your skin and reduces inflammation. The light destroys bacteria, especially Cutibacterium acneswhich are a major cause of inflammatory acne.
  • Regulation of sebum production
The light pulses can reduce the activity of the sebaceous glands. This helps to control the excessive sebum production that leads to clogged pores and acne.
  • Promotion of skin renewal
IPL stimulates the production of collagen and elastic fibres and makes a significant contribution to skin renewal. This helps to improve the skin structure and reduce acne scars.
  • Improvement of blood circulation
The treatment also promotes blood circulation and improves both the oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin. This supports healing and regeneration.
  • Reduction of redness and hyperpigmentation
IPL can also help to reduce redness and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which often remains after acne inflammation.

How do the IPL treatment against acne and the fruit acid peel work together?

Both treatments, which we offer you at the Goethe10 practice clinic in Frankfurt, can complement each other ideally and work synergistically against acne:

  • Combination of deep and surface treatment
The fruit acid peel and IPL treatment together can be an effective method for treating acne. The fruit acid peel exfoliates the skin surface, removes dead skin cells, opens clogged pores and promotes skin renewal. This optimally prepares the skin for the subsequent IPL treatment. The IPL treatment penetrates deeper into the skin, reduces inflammation, fights acne bacteria and regulates sebum production.
  • Increasing effectiveness
The peeling prepares the skin for the IPL treatment by removing the top layer of skin, allowing the light pulses to penetrate deeper. The skin can then react better to the IPL treatment, which increases the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Improve skin texture and health
A fruit acid peel helps to smooth acne scars and refine the skin texture. At the same time, the IPL treatment promotes collagen production, which supports skin tightening and renewal and accelerates the healing of acne scars. This combination of peeling and light therapy can therefore contribute effectively to improving the appearance of the skin.
  • Reduction of pigmentation and redness
The AHA peel can treat post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and make the skin look more even. At the same time, IPL treatment reduces redness and pigmentation through light pulses that target pigment cells. Together, these treatments can effectively help to improve the skin's appearance and achieve an even complexion.
  • Application scheme
    • Preparation
You can have a mild fruit acid peel performed at our clinic in Frankfurt a few days before the IPL treatment to prepare the skin.
    • Treatment cycle
The IPL treatment can be carried out at intervals of a few weeks. Between sessions, we can perform regular fruit acid peels to renew the skin and keep the pores clean.
    • Aftercare
After both treatments, you should use a soothing and moisturising skin care product to support your skin and prevent irritation. Sun protection is particularly important to protect the skin from UV damage.
