Spider veins / couperose
Frankfurt

Spider veins are tiny dilated veins just under the skin that are filled with blood and therefore become visible through the skin as light red vascular trees, dark blue veins (telangiectasias) or reddish patches.

Spider veins / couperose treatment

In some cases, the veins caused by spider veins also become visible in the form of a net. Spider veins can generally appear anywhere on the skin. However, spider veins usually appear first on the inside of the lower legs, on the thighs and on the edges of the feet.

Spider vein removal Frankfurt - Spider veins can be a precursor to varicose veins - in fact, spider veins are a type of miniature varicose vein. Spider veins are found in a good 60% of all women and men between the ages of 20 and 29. This was the result of a study at the dermatological university clinic in Bonn. Every 5% in this age group already have varicose veins. Contrary to popular belief, spider veins and varicose veins affect men just as much as women.

Spider veins are primarily an aesthetic problem. There are hardly any known cases of spider veins that cause pain. Spider veins can occur, for example, as a result of severe weight loss. However, spider veins should always be examined by a doctor. Varicose veins may have already formed in deeper areas.

In this case, appropriate measures should be taken, such as more exercise and, in some cases, the wearing of special support stockings.

If fine red veins shimmer through the skin, they are often referred to as broken veins or couperose. These red veins tend to appear on the face and upper body. Causes can include predisposition, extreme exposure to the sun and weather, but also excessive consumption of alcohol, coffee and hot spices.

Although the term "burst veins" is usually used in this context, it is not actually a case of burst veins, but rather permanently overstretched veins that can no longer contract. For many sufferers, the red veins on the face are a cosmetic problem and a psychological burden.

IPL technology

IPL pulses of high-energy light selectively obliterate smaller dermal vessels by heating them. In addition, the formation of the skin's own collagen can be stimulated with an appropriately selected wavelength.

Unlike a laser, the high-energy light can be used in different wavelengths and can be used to selectively and gently obliterate the dermal target structures. In combination with appropriate skin care, camouflage make-up and moderate exposure to sun, alcohol and coffee, good results can be expected for this cosmetic problem.

Latest device technology

In contrast to many devices that do not achieve the expected success, we work with a new technology that enables a relatively high energy input by splitting the light pulses into several so-called daughter pulses. The pulse length and pause times can also be precisely adjusted. This allows for more intensive treatment that is gentle on the skin and tissue. Depending on the respective indication, treatment is carried out at different wavelengths using a special treatment head. This is also very important in order to achieve the desired success.

After the treatment

To protect against UV radiation and pigment damage, avoid direct and unprotected exposure to the sun both before and after the procedure.

MedArt 435 diode laser

With our modern MedArt 435 diode laser, unwanted aesthetic skin changes and hairs can be removed even faster and just as gently. The advantages of the latest high-tech device lie in the low side-effect supply of energy with a variable super-long pulse of 1-1000 milliseconds and in the sophisticated cooling system.

What is the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?

Both spider veins and varicose veins are vein problems that can occur in/on the legs.

Spider veins are small, net-shaped veins that lie directly under the skin and often appear bluish or reddish in colour. They can be caused by heredity, pregnancy, hormonal changes, obesity or prolonged standing or sitting. Spider veins are generally harmless and cause no discomfort. Only rarely can they cause a tingling or burning sensation.

Varicose veins, on the other hand, are larger, tortuous veins that often appear bluish or purple under the skin. They can cause pain, heaviness, itching, swelling and cramps. They can also become inflamed or form blood clots. Varicose veins occur when the venous valves in the legs do not (or no longer) function properly and the blood cannot flow back to the heart properly. As a rule, they are more serious than spider veins and require medical treatment.

We recommend - before a treatment of the spider veins in our Practice clinic in Frankfurt - first make an appointment with a phlebologist to have the type and origin of the vein changes examined.

How common are spider veins?

An estimated 60 per cent of adults have spider veins. The veins protruding through the skin are therefore very common. It can be assumed that almost every older person has changes to their leg veins - be it varicose veins or harmless, only visually annoying spider veins.

Who gets spider veins?

In principle, anyone can be affected by spider veins: young and old, fat and thin, active and inactive people. The frequency generally increases with age.

Spider veins are also not a typical female condition. They also occur in men. However, due to hormonal fluctuations or pregnancies, women are affected more often. However, men suffer more frequently from the "big sister" of spider veins: varicose veins. Thromboses or skin changes caused by varicose veins are statistically more common in men than in women. This may be due to the fact that men are generally more negligent when it comes to preventive check-ups and general health services. Many men also do not take varicose veins as seriously and pay less attention to changes in the veins.

What are spider veins during pregnancy all about?

In women who have a genetic predisposition to spider veins, these can occur more frequently during pregnancy. The hormonal changes in the body and the strain on the blood vessels can cause existing spider veins to worsen or new ones to appear. This is mainly due to the hormone progesterone. This is increasingly produced by the female body during pregnancy. Progesterone loosens the connective tissue and the vein walls. This causes the veins to widen and the return flow of blood to the heart deteriorates because the growing belly presses on the pelvic veins. This in turn increases the blood pressure in the leg veins.

As the hormonal situation and pressure levels normalise after the birth, there is a chance that the varicose veins will disappear on their own. If the changes do not disappear, we can remove the spider veins at our clinic in Frankfurt.

Can spider veins also appear on the face?

In most cases, spider veins appear as small bluish-reddish veins on the legs - usually in the back of the knees or on the thighs. However, some women or men also notice spider veins on their face. This is referred to as couperose, spider naevi or spider veins.

Although visible veins on the face are usually medically harmless, just like spider veins on the legs, we recommend that you consult a doctor and have the appearance on your face examined. Couperose can be a precursor of Rosacea be. A spider nevus can indicate liver disease.

If these are harmless, but aesthetically disturbing, we can remove them by laser in our practice clinic in Frankfurt.

Can spider veins be removed without medical help?

Unfortunately, you cannot treat spider veins yourself. Home remedies, creams and exercise can help to care for the skin and promote blood circulation. They can also prevent the formation of new spider veins. However, they cannot eliminate existing veins that shimmer through the skin.

However, it is possible to conceal the veins visually. There are opaque tights or special camouflage make-up, for example.

How does laser therapy work for spider veins?

The abbreviation "laser" stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". In German, this means "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". A laser beam consists of highly amplified, high-energy light of the same wavelength, which can be controlled very precisely.

In aesthetic medicine, there are special laser treatments to remove skin problems such as acne, warts, age spots, pigment spots, wrinkles and, of course, spider veins. Using the energy of the laser, we can permanently close the affected vessels. They will soon no longer be visible.

The laser treatment of spider veins usually requires several sessions until the desired result is achieved.

Are the results of laser treatment for spider veins permanent?

Yes and no.

Yes, because the spider veins are broken down by the body after the laser treatment and thus disappear.

No, because new veins can form in other places if you are predisposed to this.

What is couperose?

Couperose is a skin condition characterised by dilated and visible blood vessels in the skin, particularly on the face. These dilated vessels can cause the skin to show red patches, redness or visible veins. Couperose usually affects the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead.

How does couperose develop?

The exact cause of the development of couperose is not yet fully understood. However, there are several factors and mechanisms that are associated with the skin condition:

  • Genetic predisposition
A familial predisposition to couperose can make people more susceptible to the condition. If your parents or grandparents have couperose, your risk also increases.
  • Skin sensitivity
Sensitive skin can be more prone to redness and vasodilation. External factors such as heat, cold, wind, sunlight and inappropriate skin care products can irritate the skin and contribute to couperose.
  • UV radiation
Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or solariums can weaken and dilate the blood vessels in the skin.
  • Alcohol and spicy foods
Appropriate stimulants and foods can temporarily worsen the symptoms of couperose.
  • Skin ageing
With age, the skin loses elasticity and firmness. This can contribute to vascular problems and couperose.
  • Hormonal changes
Hormonal changes in the body, such as those that can occur during pregnancy or the menopause, can also influence the development of couperose.

What are the typical symptoms of couperose?

Couperose is characterised by

  • Visible red spots or reddening of the skin, especially on the face
  • dilated blood vessels (Teleangiectasias), which often appear like thin, red or purple lines on the skin
  • Persistent or recurrent redness on the face that is aggravated by trigger factors such as heat, cold, wind, sunlight, alcohol consumption or spicy foods
  • Sensitive skin that reacts easily to external influences and skin care products
  • Slight burning or itching in the affected skin areas
  • thinning skin, which is generally more susceptible to injuries, for example

Couperose and rosacea - what are the differences?

Many people mention couperose and rosacea in the same breath and use the terms synonymously. However, they are two separate skin conditions. However, they do have some similarities and can therefore be confused with each other.

  • Form of the disease and symptoms
    • Couperose is a skin condition characterised by dilated and visible blood vessels in the skin, particularly on the face. The main features are visible redness and vasodilation. Couperose usually only affects the skin and does not normally cause inflammation or pustules.
    • Rosacea, on the other hand, is a chronic skin disease. It is usually more severe than couperose. Rosacea also manifests as redness on the face, but is also accompanied by inflammatory symptoms as well as papules and pustules. Rosacea is also typically characterised by a burning sensation on the skin. Rosacea can also occur in phases. The symptoms usually worsen and then subside again.
  • Causes
    • Factors such as genetic predisposition, skin sensitivity and UV radiation can play a role in couperose.
    • Rosacea is also triggered by genetic factors, but also by skin inflammation, vasodilation and demodex mites.
  • Treatment
    • Treatment for couperose can include laser therapy, topical creams and laser therapy. Sun protection and the use of skin care products for sensitive skin are also important.
    • Rosacea is treated with topical medication, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory creams, laser therapy and sun protection.

Can couperose heal on its own?

Couperose does not normally disappear on its own. It is a chronic skin condition in which the dilated blood vessels and redness on the face persist - unless you have it treated. Whilst couperose itself does not cause any health problems, it can be a nuisance from an aesthetic and cosmetic point of view. Those affected often find the visible symptoms unsightly.

Timely treatment can help to reduce the redness and vasodilation and improve the appearance of the skin.

What medical treatment options are there for couperose?

There are various medical treatment options for couperose that aim to reduce or eliminate the visible symptoms. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the couperose and your individual needs.

Laser treatments are one of the most effective treatment methods. We direct laser beams at your dilated blood vessels to close them. At our practice in Frankfurt, we offer you the IPL laser or the diode laser for the treatment of couperose. Other basic treatment options are

  • Electrocoagulation
This is a procedure in which an electric needle is used to seal dilated blood vessels. It is usually used for smaller areas of couperose.
  • Sclerotherapy
Dermatologists and vein specialists normally use this treatment option to treat spider veins and varicose veins. They inject a special solution into the dilated vessels to close them. In some cases, sclerotherapy is also suitable for the treatment of couperose.
  • Topical medication
Your doctor can also prescribe topical medication. They have anti-inflammatory or vasoconstrictor properties and can reduce redness and vasodilation.

How does laser therapy for couperose work?

Laser therapy for the treatment of couperose works by the targeted application of laser light to the dilated blood vessels in the skin. The laser emits a focused beam of light that is absorbed by the pigments in the blood (haemoglobin).

This process causes the blood in the dilated vessels to heat up and damage the vessels. This process is completely harmless. Over time, your body breaks down and eliminates the damaged vessels. This leads to a reduction in redness and vasodilatation.
